Scenic Route Travels

Man, is it hard to get anything done during summertime in Alaska. My house is a graveyard of abandoned projects, because who can be productive when there are hours of daylight and miles of trails waiting? In a flash, Juneau has gone from an unfamiliar dot on a map to the home I’ve been looking for. It’s like I’ve found a kindred spirit in its moody, endless wildness. Rain or shine (but… Read More

This adventure starts in a 10×20 storage unit in a sketchy Anchorage suburb with a dead car battery. I was at step 3 in a meticulously crafted plan that had an amazing amount of possibilities to go wrong. Fresh off the earliest flight from Juneau, I had less than 36 hours to drive my car north to Tok, down through the Yukon, and back into Alaska to catch an afternoon ferry from… Read More

Golden light on jagged mountain peaks in Seward, Alaska

Since I arrived in Anchorage two weeks ago with a couple of duffle bags and a lot of ridiculous notions about the great, wild, last frontier (mostly from movies), I’ve learned a lot. Alaska is somehow both more and less rugged than I had predicted- I buy my shockingly expensive groceries at a big ol’ Safeway, not a dusty local shop, but live in an apartment reminiscent of a summer camp I… Read More

It seems like half the people on my Instagram feed are in Iceland lately. And while I’m definitely not the slightest bit jealous, it got me thinking about the best things Iceland has to offer in the summer. If you’re headed north of 60° this summer, here are some of my favorite Icelandic adventures: 1. Explore some lava fields. I don’t care who you are, lava is the coolest thing. Awaken your inner fourth… Read More

Some places never really leave you. Iceland is one of them. Once you’ve traced the jagged ice of its glaciers, or watched the midnight sun graze the horizon, you’re a goner. Even after you’ve touched down on familiar soil, gotten that weird camped-for-too-long stench out of your sleeping bag, and slept in your own bed, Iceland lingers with you. I’ve spent two summers there now, and have travelled the Ring Road twice,… Read More

I caught this image as friends skipped rocks over the icy waters of the Jökulsárlón Glacial lagoon. Read more about my mishaps and adventures in Iceland here– or just follow Scenic Route Travels over the summer, because I’m headed back! That’s right, this lucky girl gets to spend another month in Iceland as camp manager to the amazing trip I went on last summer. I only hope it’s half as incredible as my… Read More

A midnight sunset caught from the edge of my tent at our campsite in Höfn, Iceland. Read about all the glacier-exploring and rockhounding here. “I just wish the world was twice as big and half of it was still unexplored.” — David Attenborough

After being spoiled by Reykjavik’s (relatively) warm weather and urban luxuries, facing Kerlingarfjöll was an unnerving task. Our campsite sat between two glaciers, at the most inward point of Iceland we would venture to. “The Interior” sounded like a place best left to Bear Grylls and his survival techniques, but we were up for the challenge. Suprisingly, although unfairly cold, the Kerlingarfjöll campsite turned out to be one of my favorites. Rows of red… Read More
